I recently decided to take on a Christmas project for our two-and-a-half-year-old after a visit to my grandparents home in Adairville, KY. After my grandfather’s death in 2006, and more recently my grandmother’s admittance to a nursing home, our family has been going through the process, more like a mission, of going through the home. For the grandchildren in my generation, it is like a treasure hunt. On a recent trip, I decided to embark on an area that I had not been since I was eight or nine years old, the basement. After trying to figure out my Granddad’s system to his madness of lights, I began looking for two childhood memories.

According to some pictures I had seen and some faint memories of when I was a toddler, there was a tricycle and also a little red fire engine that you could peddle. The fire truck was easy to spot but after a little digging in the old coal heap, I saw a handle. The handle was, in fact, a tricycle and one that I had rode on when I was a toddler 30 years ago. Excited about the find, I raised up my 6 foot 3 inch body inside a ceiling that is 6 feet. Yes, I now have a scar. Despite my injury, I still found my project for Christmas 2010.

I don’t know if you have watched the show American Restoration, but the show is dedicated to restoring items back to their original glory. Well, this show inspires me and I always enjoy a great project that allows me to use my hands and to see a finished project. This tricycle will probably be a great start to test my restoration skills. It is small, doesn’t have an engine, and to my amazement, I found the parts I needed already on the web.

As I started my plan of attack for this project, I realized that there were going to be two major parts to this restoration, the first would be making sure that I get all the rust and old paint and old broken parts off. Secondly, I would need to put a new coat of paint on the tricycle along with any other parts that needed to be replaced. I was able to find a picture of the 1930s tricycle which will give me a template to work with. This helped me narrow my search for tires, pedals, and handles that will need to be replaced. Despite finding all this, there is still going to be some elbow grease needed and some help from a couple of church members to finish this project by December 25.

This Christmas project is not too distant from the project that God has with me and those that He calls His own. Think about it! We know that God’s desire is to make us more like his Son, Jesus Christ, who was perfect and fulfilled every desire that God had intended for man. Because of Christ, there is a template that God constantly is working to bring us near to. Now we are, in no way, going to ever be Jesus the God/Man, but Christ is the example for all of us as humans. Now many us try to restore ourselves, by putting on new coats of paint first, but you know, as well as I do, rust is not fixed with a coat of paint, and neither is sin covered by trying to make it look good. We are in need of someone to restore us. Simply said, we need someone to take off all our rust, and old parts that don’t work, and then secondly put a new coat of paint and parts that are part of the original design. My Christmas project will hopefully be finished in a few weeks, but we have to realize that our process that we call sanctification will take a lifetime. Unlike this little red tricycle, we humans fight and claw not to be restored, but because of His mercy and grace He chooses to fight for our progress to continue.

So what do we take from this? First we must realize that we are a process in the making. “If we confess Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness”(I John 1:9). Secondly, we have to remember that those around us are either projects in the making or someone who is waiting in the coal heap waiting to be introduced to the Restorer. This Christmas season may we submit to His work in us, be patient with other in the same process, and reach out to those who need the steadfast love of the One who sent His only Son over 2000 years ago, so that we might know our Maker and Restorer.

(excerpt from series: “A Family One” by Philip D. Brown)

T his past week I was able to go to New York City for a family wedding. If you didn’t read between the lines in my opening sentence then I will repeat it. I flew into New York City on the 9th Anniversary of 9/11. I have to say that I did feel a little bit of the jitters, but my fear was distracted by the plane’s pilot as he instructed us to look out the right side of our plane minutes before our landing. We were able to see Ground Zero where there was placed two lights that beamed up in the air to make a light memorial in the New York skyline. The memory of where I was, that September morning, flashed through my head and I was reminded how much things had changed since then. I was glad to have my family and the friends that I soon would see.

Between seeing one of my best friends from college and seminary and the wedding, my family also took in the sights including walking past “Ground Zero”. With all the talks of Muslim Center next to the site, the Memorial Wall (see picture) for the Police, Firemen and First Responders seemed more emotional to me. Being only one day after special 9/11 services occurring where I stood, there was no lack of flowers and burning candles. Thousands of men and women had died that day, not knowing that morning that their lives would end on this earth.

The most impacting memorial I experience was one that I did not expect.   That memorial would be the one  I experienced at church that day.   At the Gallery Church where Freddy T. Wyatt is now Senior Pastor, they partake in Communion/Lord’s Supper each week.   If you didn’t get it …the communion is a memorial! I had never related the Lord’s Supper in such a way. Here I was, taking in the memorials of 9/11 in New York City, and it would take those memorials to open my eyes further to get the wish that Christ made that night with his disciples. That night as the disciples and Christ ate the Passover meal, Christ stops them and gives them the instructions for his memorial service. Unlike that people remembered by the memorial at Ground Zero, Christ knew that he was about to die. In I Corinthians 11 we read;

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. In these words Christ tells us that when we eat the bread and drink the cup we are to remember him and the life changing power of His body and blood that would be broken and poured out for our sin.

What is really amazing is that there are so many times that the cross / crucifix takes the place of the memorial of Christ. The cross is a symbol of the Saviors death and Paul writes numerous times in his letters to Corinth, Galatia, and Philippi that we should not belittle the cross and what Christ did that wonderful day. This is not to contradict Paul, but just as the memorial at Ground Zero pointed me to think of the people that died in the towers, communion reminds us to think what our Savior did on that cross. Crosses can be found on the highways and thousands in graveyards as memorials to those who have died, but there is only one person that we think of when we take communion.

I am glad to be a part of 9th and O Baptist church where communion is a great part of what we do. I know that next time that I partake of communion it will be more than taking the bread and juice, it will be a Memorial Service.

Whether you consider yourself a solid believer or are just looking at our blog to see what is out there, this would be a great opportunity to see what God says about the importance of unity.

In our world today where divorce tears up more than the mom and dad, and you have to dig pretty deep to find faithful sports professionals that stick to a team, we need to be reminded of our God that is always faithful and sets an example for us in relationships by being in perfect union within the trinity.

Come this Wednesday and hear more about God’s design for us to live in unity. We are not alone!

Ninth & O Baptist Church

Wednesday, August 18, we will start back with our weekly gathering for single adults at Ninth and O. Reality is designed in conjunction with our church body here at Ninth and O. Each night this fall we will focus on sharing with with you our life changing stories of faith and how God uses our church to be the catalyst for growth in our relationships with other human beings and with our Savior, Jesus Christ (Luke 2:52) Reality consist of musical praise and worship, testimonies, relevant and challenged truth from God’s Word, and conversations and fellowship around a table at some of our favorite restaurants to cap off the night.

I will be sharing with you my vision for our singles ministry here at Ninth and O and will be articulating more clearly how you can be part of our body here at Ninth and O.

This summer many of you have been apart of our Sunday morning Bible Studies that are going through a series on Prayer. So why are focusing our efforts on prayer? We are for multiple reasons, but most of all because we are called to by Christ to do so. Secondly, we have focused on this aspect of our christian walk bacause of it being essential in our lives. Finally, we are going through this study because it can be one of the hardest disciplines. I believe this to be true because our advesary knows how powerful prayer can be.

As pastor of our Single Adults, I would ask you to do three things.

1. Get involved in our Sunday Morning Bible Studies (BFGs) so that you can be challenged and receive accountable for your prayer life

2. Stop and Pray right now.

3. Fill out this form that will help us guage our single adults on their prayer life. You will not be asked for your name. (Click Here)

Because of Him,

In our world filled with technology, our generation has acquired a new vocabulary. From your desktop or laptop to the newest smartphone, we are all challenged to learn not only what’s new but how to use it and maintain our latest piece of technology.

The current REALITY lesson series compares and contrasts the computer server and how we, as Christians, are called to be “Servers – Up and Running”. (Romans 12)

What is REALITY? It is a praise and worship service just for singles. College students… working professionals… people from every walk of life join together, to strengthen the community. We dedicate this time to worshiping our Savior and learning from the Word.

REALITY is held on Wednesdays. Everyone should arrive around 7:00 PM and we will begin at 7:15 PM.

The Server – Up and Running
Series Dates April 14- May 26
(April 28th- No Reality)

2010 is underway and so is REALITY!

What is REALITY? It is a praise and worship service just for singles. College students… working professionals… people from every walk of life join together, to strengthen the community. We dedicate this time to worshiping our Savior and learning from the Word.

The sermon series that is currently underway is “Lessons from Leah Mae: As Confirmed by God’s Word”. Philip Brown (NAOBC Associate Pastor, Singles) has learned many lessons in his short time as a father. This is not a ‘how-to’ on parenting. It is a study in perspective on how our Heavenly Father imparts love and discipline to us… His children.

Everyone should arrive around 7:00 PM and we will begin shortly after.
